KL Rahul's Early Life and Family Background

KL Rahul was born on April 18, 1992, in Bangalore. He has spent most of his childhood growing up in Mangalore. It is a coastal city in Karnataka. His family background is deeply rooted in academics. 

His father  is a professor of civil engineering and former Director at the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK). His mother is a history teacher at Mangalore University. This gave young Rahul a disciplined atmosphere to grow in.

Jain University, Bangalore: The Turning Point

KL Rahul began his  formal cricket training at the age of 10. He was already playing competitive matches for the Bangalore United Cricket Club at the age of 12.  ICC Under-19 World Cup

Ranji Trophy 2014–15: Karnataka's First Triple Centurion

Rahul returned to the Ranji Trophy and gave one of the most historic innings in Karnataka's cricketing history.

He scored 337 runs off 448 balls Against Uttar Pradesh in Bengaluru. His runs included 47 fours and 4 sixes. This made him Karnataka's first-ever triple-centurion in first-class cricket.

He followed that up with 188 in the Ranji Trophy final. Kl Rahul finished the entire season with a remarkable average of 93.11 in 9 matches. 

India A Tour of Australia 

Rahul became part of the India A squad that toured Australia in July–August 2014. He got good starts in each match but only managed a highest score of 52. He got good experience of playing in Australian conditions.

Vijay Hazare Trophy: Return After Six Years (2026)

Rahul's commitment to domestic cricket did not end with his rise to international stardom. He returned to represent Karnataka in the 2025–26 Vijay Hazare Trophy. Test match Debut 

Rahul made his Test debut for India national cricket team during the 2014 tour of Australia. He played his first Test match in the famous Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. He scored only 3 and 1 in the match. This was a disappointing performance by him in his entire career.

KL Rahul's IPL Career

Debut & Early Years (2013–2015)

KL Rahul made his IPL debut in 2013 for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) . He was just a 20 year old domestic wicketkeeper-batsman. His first match was against the Mumbai Indians at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. He finished the season with just 20 runs from 5 matches.

He was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in 2014. Rahul played primarily as a middle-order batsman. He was an occasional opener across the 2014 and 2015 seasons. His playing technique still needed more work as he had an average below 25 during his time with the franchise.
