Team History  

The team had a slow start but built a strong squad with players like Sachin Tendulkar over the years. The team won multiple IPL titles (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020) under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma.

Season: 2008

Captain: Sachin Tendulkar / Harbhajan Singh / Shaun Pollock (multiple captains represented the team due to injuries)

The team started poorly by losing its first four matches. Continuous captain changes created confusion in leadership. The injuries to key players affected the team's balance during the season. Shaun Pollock led a strong comeback with 6 consecutive wins in the season. Mainly, consistency was missing in the team. The Mumbai Indians took 5th place on the points table among all teams. 

Season: 2009-10

Captain: Sachin Tendulkar

IPL was played in South Africa due to elections in India during the season. The Batting lineup of the Mumbai Indians failed to perform consistently. The Team struggled with combinations and form.  Mumbai Indians reached 7th in the points table. It failed to qualify for the playoffs again.

In the season 2010, the team became more balanced. Sachin Tendulkar had a legendary season with consistent runs.  The team reached their first IPL final. Sachin Tendulkar won the Orange Cap by making 618 runs. But it lost to the Chennai Super Kings in the final.

Season: 2011-12

2011: Sachin Tendulkar again led the team in 2011. The team continued strong performances from this season. It reached the playoffs with consistent team effort but was defeated by royal challenger Bengaluru. 

2012: The captain of the Mumbai Indians changed to Harbhajan Singh in 2012. Leadership change brought a new approach. The team still lost key matches in crucial stages. At last, it got eliminated by the Chennai Super Kings in the playoffs.

Era of Dominance: Championship Wins

2013: Mumbai Indians won their first IPL title by beating Chennai Super Kings. This win was important because the team finally became champions under Rohit Sharma.

2015: Mumbai Indians won their second title by defeating Chennai Super Kings again. They played very well and proved they were one of the best teams in the IPL.

2017: They won a very close final against Rising Pune Supergiant by just 1 run. Their bowlers did a great job under pressure.

2019: Mumbai Indians again beat Chennai Super Kings in a very tight match, winning by just 1 run in the final.

2020: They dominated the season and easily beat the Delhi Capitals in the final to win their fifth title.

Mumbai Indians ESA

ESA (Education and Sports for All) is a foundation started to support children from underprivileged backgrounds. It is a major initiative by Reliance Foundation, which was established in 2008. ESA also works with many NGOs that focus on the education of children. The Mumbai Indians team's matches at home are free for these children to watch live in the stadium. Women's empowerment and community development are also major goals of ESA.
