What are dental crowns?

At Jains Dental Villa we make use of dental crowns in such a way that they blend in seamlessly with your natural teeth. Crowns are mainly used to fix teeth that have deteriorated over a period of time. Crowns have a number of benefits such as improving the appearance of your smile. It is like a strong cap that is placed over your damaged tooth to make it robust. They can also be placed on implants thus resulting in a completely working, brand new tooth. Teeth can undergo decay or physical damage. But worry not. At Jains Dental Villa we have you covered. We make use of strong and durable crowns to fix your oral health issues. Dental crowns have aesthetic benefits but the primary intention of using a dental crown is to ensure that your damaged teeth are repaired and strengthened thus improving your overall oral health. The usual material that are used to manufacture dental crowns are porcelain and gold.

Why do you need a dental crown?

Crowns are used to repair damage teeth. They also have aesthetic benefits. For example if you undergo root canal treatment, a crown can be fitted at the end of the procedure in order to make the treated tooth look pleasing to the eye. But the primary function of a crown is to restore a damaged tooth. Teeth that have been decayed, fractured or eroded require dental crowns. Tooth tissue is required in order to hold a filling together. The lack of a sufficient amount of tooth tissue could necessitate the use of a crown to hold the filling together.

What are the types of dental crowns?

  1. Porcelain Crowns: These crowns are made from porcelain as the name suggests. Sometimes ceramic material that have similar properties to porcelain are also used in the manufacture of these crowns. Porcelain has several benefits with regards to its use in the making of crowns. The translucent nature of porcelain makes it quite homogenous with enamel thereby fitting in seamlessly with your other teeth. Thus a porcelain crown is perfect for front teeth. However porcelain crowns do have a few drawbacks. They can be brittle and hence should not be used for rear teeth.
  2. Zirconia Crowns: Zirconia is an oxide of the metal Zirconium. Zirconium has properties that are very similar to that of Titanium. Thus Zirconium is very tough and robust making it a better option than porcelain. The likelihood of damage to a Zirconia crown is much lesser. Zirconia crowns can be selected in such a way that they blend in beautifully with your teeth especially with regard to its colour.
  3. Resin Crowns: A composite resin represents a less expensive option when going for dental crowns. Unlike other crowns which are fitted directly to the damaged tooth, the composite resin is applied to the tooth and moulded and then set with the help of UV light. But one of the major drawbacks of the resin crown is that it is not very durable. As far as colour is concerned, resin crowns can be made to fit in smoothly with your other teeth.
  4. Full Metal Crowns: These crowns are typically made of metals such as Nickel, Chromium, Gold or Palladium. The colour of these metals do not match with your teeth. Hence they are generally used for teeth that are at the back of the mouth. But some people like the appearance of a full metal crown in their front teeth, especially gold. Since these crowns are made of metal, they are extremely durable and are very difficult to break thus making them a popular choice especially for back teeth.
  5. Porcelain bonded to metal crowns: These crowns are predominantly made of metal. A porcelain cap is fitted on the metal. Since these crowns have a high percentage of metal in them, they are darker in appearance and do not blend seamlessly with the rest of your teeth. Hence they are usually used for rear teeth.

Advantages of Dental Crowns

  1. Dental crowns blend in seamlessly with neighbouring teeth thus making them an attractive option.
  2. Crowns play an important role in cosmetic dentistry.
  3. Most crowns are durable and long-lasting if they are taken care of carefully.

                                                                       What are dental bridges?

A dental bridge is a prosthesis that is used to replace teeth that are missing. The bridge occupies the space in your mouth that is devoid of teeth. Generally a bridge is present between two dental crowns. Dental bridges are used when teeth get damaged. If the damaged tooth is beyond repair it is prudent to opt for a dental bridge or an implant. Dentures are also an option but bridges are effective too. Some of the factors that need to be kept in mind while going for bridges are density of the jaw bone and diagnosis of oral health. A person suffering with periodontitis is not suitable for using a bridge. At Jains Dental Villa we make sure that we perform a comprehensive oral health diagnosis before going ahead with any kind of treatment. Dental implants are not suitable for patients with low jaw bone density. Bridges are an excellent substitute in such cases.

                                                                     Why are dental bridges required?

Dental bridges are used to replace missing teeth. A damaged or decayed tooth can be replaced with the help of a dental bridge. If a damaged tooth cannot be repaired, it has to be replaced with the aid of a dental bridge. One advantage that bridges have over implants is that surgery is not required in the former. Bridges can fit in seamlessly along with your natural teeth thanks to the use of porcelain.

What are the types of dental bridges?

  1. Traditional Dental Bridge: This is the most frequently used bridge. The two ends of the bridge have dental crowns. Crowns are bonded to the natural teeth at either end of the gap and the area between the teeth is occupied by the bridge. A bridge is usually used if the teeth at either end are healthy.
  2. Cantilever Dental Bridge: The fundamental difference a cantilever dental bridge and the traditional dental bridge is that the former has a dental crown at only one end. When the bridge is attached to the abutment tooth, the artificial tooth is suspended over the gap. Cantilever bridges are used in cases when natural teeth are located at only one end of the gap.
  3. Maryland Dental Bridge: A bridge is generally secured between two dental crowns. But here the bridge is present between metal wings instead of crowns. The bridge is held in place by the wings that are bonded between neighbouring teeth. These bridges are used to replace front teeth because they are not strong enough to replace rear teeth. They get their name because they were popularized in the dental school of the University of Maryland.
  4. Implant Supported Bridge: A traditional dental bridge rests between two natural teeth. But an implant supported bridge rests between two dental implants. Dental implants are used when natural teeth are not good strong enough to support the bridge. Before the bridge is fixed between the two implants, it is extremely important for the implants to fuse with the jaw bone. The entire process of setting an implant bridge may take from a minimum of three months to a maximum of six months.

                                                                     Advantages of Bridges

  1. The placement of a bridge doesn’t require surgery. A surgery is required only in the case of an implant supported bridge. The placement of a Maryland bridge, traditional bridge or even a cantilever bridge can be finished in one visit. The time required for healing is also not very long.
  2. As compared to dental implants, bridges are much more cost effective as they don’t require surgery.
  3. A bridge has a significant advantage over a denture in the fact that it is far more stable since it is placed between two healthy teeth or two dental implants. Dentures can move around when performing activities such as eating and talking.
  4. Dentures are more conspicuous since they move around more than bridges.
